Transitioning to Fall

Hey, Sewists!  Now that I knocked the last bit of summer sewing off my list, I am ready for fall.  Fall is my absolute favorite season because of the wool textures.  Plaids, houndstooth, herringbone, you name it when it comes to wool and I want it.  It is still a bit too warm around here for wool just yet, so I am easing into it by making some pieces that will work well for both summer and fall.  Enter McCall’s M7387!

I am a sucker for a buttondown shirt dress.  I made view D without the pockets using this great Tan Rayon Challis.  Because the tan is a great neutral it allows me to style and accessorize my version of the pattern in so many ways, making it great for summer and fall.

Can we also just take a moment to talk about this back pleat?  It is not your traditional buttondown shirt pleat.  This one overlaps at an angle creating a cool modern look.  I am in love with the effect it gives. Too bad it is mostly going to be covered up with sweaters and cardigans this fall.

Here, I paired it with view A of McCall’s M6084, an oldy but a goodie.  This one is made from this luscious Olive Green Modal Jersey Knit.  Oh boy, is this modal jersey soft?! It is lightweight and drapey.  I have actually been pairing this cardigan with several other outfits as well for summer.

I have actually been pairing this cardigan with several other outfits as well for summer.  Both of these pieces are in the military-inspired color neutral family that is very popular right now.  But because they are both neutrals I can add other pieces in bright bolder colors and they work for both summer and fall.

I think this dress would be great with some open-toed boots, and now I am on the hunt for the perfect pair.

Do you make pieces that transition between seasons? What are some of your go-to patterns for these pieces?

Such a great transitional outfit! I love your color choices. I actually just ordered some tencel denim to make the same pattern (and view!) and now I’m thinking I may need a sleeveless cardigan to pair with it 😀
