Softest Baby Sweaters

Warning…today’s post may give you a raging case of baby fever!

With a new little one expected to arrive within a few months, I’ve been on a baby clothes sewing kick.   Since it will still be cold when baby arrives, the item I’ve probably had the most fun sewing is baby sweaters.  Combine tiny, cute sweater patterns with the softest fabric from Cali Fabrics, and you’ve totally got the ability to turn a grown person into a puddle of mush!

The 1st sweater I made used Light Grey/Dark Grey Heather Reversible Double Jersey Knit and the Grandpa Cardigan pattern from Brindle & Twig.  What I love about this fabric is you can use both sides to create a perfectly coordinating garment.  Plus it’s just about as soft and squishy as you can imagine!  I used one side for the collar and cuffs, and the other for the main body of the sweater.  I included the scissors in the above photo for scale…this sweater is size 0-3 months, and it’s really tiny!

Next I used some Charcoal Grey Lightweight Stretch French Terry to make another Grandpa Cardigan in 3-6 month size and a Bimaa Sweater in 6-12 month size.  I’ve sewn with French Terry from several other sources, but this French Terry is definitely the softest and fluffiest I’ve ever felt.  In fact, when one of my sons felt the sweaters he immediately requested a Bimaa Sweater in his size exactly like the tiny one I had just finished.

Because we don’t know if we are having a boy or a girl, I chose to make all the sweaters in shades of grey.  After looking at them, some of my family thought they were too “boyish” for a girl to wear and wondered how they would work if the baby is a girl.  So I created a couple of sample layouts for them.  This one is the Reversible Double Jersey Knit cardigan with a girly skirt, baby hat and ruffled bloomers.

Next I paired the French Terry Bimaa sweater with a purple rosette skirt and some little leather moccasins.  Bam…girly outfit!

Finally, I grabbed some fabric from my stash to show how the grey/mint Grandpa Cardigan would look with a little dress in some girly fabric.  I think this fabric or this fabric would be lovely too!

If you want to baby yourself, or you’re sewing for a baby, try these softer than soft fabrics from Cali Fabrics!
