Preppy Plaid Larkspur Dress

Fall/Winter sewing to me means time to break out the plaid.  Cali Fabrics has a huge selection to choose from and I couldn’t help myself and grabbed a handful to play with.

For this project I used this Mid-weight Black Watch Plaid.  It was thick and perfect for this structured dress.  This Tartan Wool Suiting or this Tartan Wool Blend are similar prints and would look great in this style dress also.

This dress is the brand new Larkspur Dress from Hey June Handmade.  For the month of December you can purchase this pattern and all proceeds will go to Feeding America, a non-profit organization working to provide meals and fresh produce to those in need.  A new pattern for you and meals for those less fortunate- not a bad way to spend $8!

As I searched my stash for something that coordinated for the collar I kept going back to this remnant of faux leather home dec fabric I picked up from my local craft store.  I love the preppy edge it gives the dress.  It’s thick and I knew a double layered collar would be a wreck with it so I simply cut my two collar pieces, trimmed off the seam allowance and topstitched.  Easy peasy!

larkspur7I love the possibilities with this dress.  It comes in sizes 6-16, multiple sleeve lengths, and optional sleeve and neckline notches.  It’ll look just as cute come spring in a fun floral from the shop too!larkspur5

Now, I love to sew for my kids.  It’s usually a lot quicker, it takes less fabric, and they outgrow things so there is always a need for something new.  The huge downside is that I’m insanely jealous of most of their clothes- this dress being one of them.  I love simple silhouettes and black watch plaid has always been a favorite of mine.  Throw in that collar and pockets and I’m longing for my own so BAD!

Looks like I’m on the hunt for a killer shift dress pattern so I can stop coveting and just make my own.  I know where to get the perfect fabric…
