Hello Lovely Readers!
Welcome to my second post on the Cali & Co Blog! I’ve been doing a lot of “comfortable” sews recently, so I was itching for a challenge and decided my next sew would be something I’ve never sewn before, with fabric I’ve never used before. I was browsing the site and came across this gorgeous Red, Black and Ivory Plaid Heavy Weight Loose Weave Poly Twill and I just had to have it! I’ve never used loose weave poly twill before and I have been meaning to sew a cozy outerwear garment since it’s finally starting to cool down here in SoCal. Outerwear usually needs a lining and this Ivory Polar Fleece was a perfect match. My fabrics came in record time as per usual and I was pretty excited to see what I had gotten myself into – and I gotta tell you…loose weave TWILL is nothing like I imagined; I thought, this “twill” certainly be interesting! (haha, see what I did there!)
I wasn’t sure if I need to pre-wash my fabrics, and google search wasn’t much help because some articles would say yes while other’s said it wasn’t necessary. So, I went ahead and just pulled it from the box and threw it in the wash, …..NOT MY SMARTEST MOVE. Loose weave is exactly just that LOOSE! I opened the washer to find that not only did I have twill, but I had yarn now too!! (haha)
NOW I KNOW, WHEN IT COMES TO LOOSE WEAVE, IT IS SMART TO SERGE THE ENDS BEFORE CHUCKING IT IN THE WASH! – Lesson learnt. Best part about the journey is learning along the way!. 🙂
Now that I had less of my fabric, I decided it would probably be smart to choose an outerwear pattern that wouldn’t need too much fabric should in case I made another mistake. I went to my Pinterest board of “Future Sews” to see if I had pinned something I could use and found the super cute unisex Big Bad Wolf Vest by Puperita Patterns . it was perfect!
The sew came together quicker than I thought, and the fabric was pretty easy to work with to match my pattern lines.
The pattern comes with closure options, but I decided not to add one to mine.
Favorite thing about this pattern is the side pockets! If it has pockets she’ll wear it happily!
I definitely satisfied my need for a challenging sew and I’m looking forward to working with twill some more. I’m eyeing this Aqua Paisley Print at the moment. (You can check out the all the different Twill prints HERE).
And that’s it for today’s blog post, Thank you for stopping today! Talk to you soon! xoxo – Candice
